Frequently Asked Questions regarding a Parish Council:
What is the purpose of a Parish Council? A Parish Council assists the paster in his leadership role of planning, organizing, initiating, promoting, coordination, and reviewing the evangelization, worship, and service activities within the parish.
How many people should be on a parish council? Parish Councils must have at least five councilors, but other than this minimum, there are no statutory or recommended numbers.
How often should a Parish Council meet? Parish Councils must hold at least four meetings a year.
Can any parishioner attend a Parish Council meeting? Yes, parishioners are invited to attend and also speak with Parish Council members at any time.
How are Parish Council members selected? The Church, as an ordered communion, needs a structure the provides for the sharing of responsibility through advisement, advocacy, and accomplishment. Individuals may be invited to attend a Parish Council meeting in order to determine if they will be a good fit to join.
We are regularly seeking new members who can offer fresh ideas for our parish! If you feel called to be a part of our Parish Council, or if you are invited to join, please prayerfully consider being a part of this important membership.

PARISH TRUSTEES

In civil law, Blessed Sacrament Parish like any other parish in the diocese is a corporation which is governed by a Board of Trustees which includes the Bishop, Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia, the pastor and two lay individuals (Trustees) subject to the canonical jurisdiction of the Diocesan Bishop, according to NYS Law. The Parish Finance Council acts in an advisory capacity and the Parish Trustees participate more directly to ensure the wellbeing of the parish.
The duties of the Board of Trustees are fiduciary and require responsibility for the care and preservation of the temporalities and property of the parish corporation.
The Board of Trustees votes to approve any sale of real property. Following the approval of the Diocesan Bishop, the parish may then petition the NYS courts for an order to allow the sale. The Board of Trustees would need to act in a similar manner if the parish mortgages or leases any of its real property.
Along with the Parish Finance Council, the Lay Trustees play an active role in the review of the annual parish corporation budget. Additionally, the Lay Trustees are responsible for reviewing and signing the annual financial report of the parish corporation along with the pastor, after the Finance Council has reviewed it. The report is then forwarded to the Bishop.
